Observation of Gravitational Lensing in the Clumpy Universe

چکیده
We discuss how inhomogeneities of the universe affect observations of the gravitational lensing; (1) the bending angle, (2) the lensing statistics and (3) the time delay. In order to take account of the inhomogeneities, the Dyer-Roeder distance is used, which includes a parameter representing the clumpiness of the matter along the line of sight. It is shown analytically that all three combinations of distances appearing in the above observations (1)-(3) are monotonic with respect to the clumpiness in general, for any given set of the density parameter, cosmological constant and redshifts of the lens and the source. Some implications of this result for the observation are presented; the clumpiness decreases both the bending angle and the lensing event rate, while it increases the time delay. We also discuss cosmological tests using the gravitational lensing in the clumpy universe. Subject headings: cosmology:theory gravitational lensing

Constraints on Scalar-Field Dark Energy from the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey Gravitational Lens Statistics
We use the statistics of strong gravitational lensing based on the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) data to constrain cosmological parameters in a spatially-flat, inverse power-law potential energy density, scalar-field dark energy cosmological model. The lensing-based constraints are consistent with, but weaker than, those derived from Type Ia supernova redshift-magnitude data, and mildly fa...
متن کاملCosmological Simulation of Gravitational Weak Lensing in Open Models
Cosmological simulation of gravitational weak lensing in open models with (Ω0, λ0) = (0.2, 0) and (0.4, 0) is treated using the direct integration method, which is independent of the multi-lens-plane method. Statistical averages of optical quantities (the convergence, shear, and amplification) are derived for ray bundles passing through the clumpy universe, in which the initial state has the CD...
متن کاملLectures on Gravitational Lensing
These lectures give an introduction to Gravitational Lensing. We discuss lensing by point masses, lensing by galaxies, and lensing by clusters and larger-scale structures in the Universe. The relevant theory is developed and applications to astrophysical problems are discussed.
متن کاملCharacterizing the Cluster Lens Population
We present a detailed investigation into which properties of cold dark matter halos make them effective strong gravitational lenses. The cross sections for giant arc formation of 878 clusters from a high-resolution N-body simulation of the ΛCDM cosmology are measured by ray tracing through 13,594 unique projections. We measure concentrations, axis ratios, orientations, and the amount of substru...
متن کاملObserving Gravitational Radiation with QSO Proper Motions and the SKA
The history of astronomy has been that of our measurement of photons from astrophysical objects and, more recently, the early universe (the CMB). Analogously, the universe is thought to be suffused by gravitational radiation — a background from sources in the early universe (e.g., inflation) and “foregrounds” from the gravitational interaction of massive astrophysical objects, such as the massi...
